Miami filmmakers attend HEED gala and NYU conference on eating disorders
Joanna Popper and Arne Zimmermann, of Zakto Film LLC, attended the HEED gala and NYU Medical School conference in New York City
Miami, Florida-- November 18, 2005. Miami documentary filmmakers Joanna Popper and Arne Zimmermann attended the Helping End Eating Disorders (HEED) gala event November 17 and the New York University Medical School conference on strategies for treatment and awareness on eating disorders. The vigil is dedicated to eating disorders awareness and prevention education and run by volunteers whose members include former and current sufferers, family members, and friends. At the gala, best-selling author and actionist Jessica Weiner spoke, while Jeanine Cogan of the Eating Disorders Coalition and Jill M. Pollack were honored. Justine and Alicia, two girls who suffered from eating disorders who were treated by Dr. Ira Sacker also spoke on their experiences and recoveries. Media from “The Insider” were at the event and covered it on their show. Speakers at the conference included: Dr Sacker, Michael Feldman, Jeanine Cogan, Jessica Weiner and Melissa Nishawala.
Joanna and Arne produced the well-received documentary on eating disorders, “The ABC’s of Eating Disorders” in 2005. The documentary was featured in many National Eating Disorder Awareness Week events as well as media including CNN, the Chicago Tribune, the Miami Herald, and Univision.
Joanna and Arne are now developing a second documentary on eating disorders, focusing on inspirational recover stories. At the gala and conference, , they interviewed many people on their experiences with eating disorders and recovery including: Jessica Weiner, Michael Feldman, Gail Schoenbach, Alicia Mitchell and her family and Dr. Ira Sacker.
